Shetland Reel:

Saxa Vord is also home to Shetland Reel Gin and Blended Malt Whisky. The distillery was setup by two couples - Debbie and Frank Strang and Stuart and Wilma Nickerson - to produce Shetland's first single malt whisky and to be the most northerly in the UK. Over the last three years they have developed a range of island inspired gin and blended malt whisky that have received international acclaim. With the gin being exported across the world, plans are now in place to install the whisky stills and start the distillation of the single malt.

With a range of gin on offer there is something for everyone. The Original recipe uses the sweet scented leaves of apple mint grown and harvested on Unst whilst the Ocean Sent used bladderwrack seaweed foraged from the shores to create a smooth savoury finish. Reflecting the long summer evenings the Simmer Gin takes lots of citrus, caraway and a hint of liquorice to create bittersweet notes and if you're looking for something truly special they produce Up Helly Aa; a cask aged navy strength gin.

To discover more the distillery opens it's doors from April - September for guided tours and tastings. Tours run on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 12noon and last approx. 1 hour. You get to taste the full range so don't forget a designated driver, or better yet reserve a night at the resort. Bookings are advisable so give them a call on 01957 711 217.
